Wireless Frequencies

Wireless Camera Systems let you install and set up your surveillance video system quickly... because there are no wires or cables. However, when you are deciding whether a wireless solution is for you there are a few facts you need to consider in regard to the public radio frequencies you will be using.

Which Wireless Frequencies Will You Use?

Wireless transmitters operate over the same standard frequencies used by personal and public wireless networks. Think of your cordless phone, the wireless internet network yo operate at home or at work, public wifi networks. The only frequency approved by the FCC for wireless networks is the 2.4 GHz range. But you will find wireless cameras that use the 1.2Ghz frequency. They do so to keep away from the 2.4Ghz frequency, reducing the possibility of interference that can interrupt the video signal.

Will a cordless phone interfere with wireless cameras? Yes, cordless phones that operate on the 2.4 Ghz frequency will cause interference with 2.4 GHz cameras. However, interference should be minimal and usually only occurs if the phone is physically located between thewireless camera and receiver.

Will my wireless router interfere with wireless cameras? Yes, wireless networks that operate on the 2.4 Ghz frequency will cause interference with 2.4 GHz cameras. But again, the interference should be minimal and usually only occurs if the router is physically located between the wireless camera and receiver. All wireless internet networks and Wifi have the potential to cause interference too. Conditions vary from location to location.

How Many Wireless Security Cameras Can You Have In One Location?

You can have up to four wireless cameras in one location. So, technically a wireless camera system with four 2.4 Ghz transmitters might actually be transmitting on the 2.414Ghz, 2.432Ghz, 2.450Ghz, or 2.468Ghz frequencies. Most wireless transmitter/receivers support up to 8 channels. This helps reduce interference by allowing you to select a frequency with no other local users (like you phone, wifi, wireless network etc.).

Do You Need A Wireless Transmitter For Each Security Camera?

  • No, if you only want to monitor or record from one camera (one channel) at at time
  • Yes, if you want to monitor or record all four cameras simultaneously

You will only be able to view one camera at a time if you only use one receiver. Using one receiver you can switch from camera to camera as you wish. But to view all cameras at once you'll need four receivers, one transmitter/receiver unit for each security camaera.

If you plan to install multiple wireless cameras in one location it's best to order them at the same time so that the cameras can be preset on different channels. But you can usually make adjustments on your own by following the instructions in the manual.
