How Do Hidden Cameras Work?

When stripped down to the basics a hidden camera is simply a small board camera carefully built into an everyday item like a clock, radio, toy or almost anything you can think of that easily blends into the home or office environment.

Board cameras feature a very small but powerful lens often referred to as a pinhole lens. The small size of a pinhole lens allows it to be easily hidden inside everyday items. When shopping for a hidden camera consider the environment in which you will be recording. Board cameras with high quality CCD lenses give higher resolution sensitivity to light, making them an excellent choice for recording video outdoors or in low-light conditions.

Wired Hidden Cameras

A hidden camera that is "wired" simply means the board camera is physically connected by wire to a remote viewing or recording device such as an embedded DVR , VCR, or TV monitor.

If you are looking to save money wired hidden cameras provide a great low-cost solution… BUT only if you have a way to hide the wires! Hidden cameras in items that have wires of their own like hidden camera computer speakers are a good example of a wired installation that won’t be detected. In this case because wires are a natural part of the item. Hidden cameras in items normally attached to a wall like clocks or emergency lights are also good bets.

Wireless Hidden Cameras

A "wireless" hidden cameras means the board camera is attached to a small but powerful wireless transmitter which sends a video signal to a receiver... like a radio. The receiver is then connected to a remote viewing or redcording device like an embedded  DVR, TV or VCR unit. From there the security video feed can be monitored live or recorded for later playback

Wireless hidden cameras cost more because of the added transmitter and receiver hardware. The cost is often worth it because the absence of wires means you can more easily place the hidden camera in a location where it will not be detected.

Built-in DVR Hidden Cameras

A hidden camera with a built-in DVR means the board camera is attached to a micro sized digital video recorder. The DVR captures the video directly to a small removable chip (like your camera) or memory card. When you want to view the recorded video simply pull out the memory card and slip it into your laptop to view.

A DVR hidden camera costs more because of the added DVR hardware inside. But the DVR technique allows you to record without any concerns about wires, frequency transmission. or distance. Its a great choice for remote or isolated locations and where live monitoring is not required.
